Merchant City

A series of street scenes in the Merchant City in Glasgow, Scotland.

The series has been done primarily in black and white so as not to distract from the forms of the scenes . However I felt some of the images were enhanced by the retention of colour to show some of the vivid tones that were present and in particular the contrast between red and yellow sandstone buildings.

This represents only a small number of the sights that can be captured in the Merchant City –  a location I will be certain to visit again as part of developing a collection of works on this theme.

Row of restaurants and bars on Hutcheson Street in the Merchant City. Red and yellow sandstone buildings. The retention of colour brings more life to the scene and conveys the vibrance of the masonry in the buildings. While I initially tried a monochrome conversion of this image I felt it lost something as a result.

In the Merchant City looking towards Trongate. Shallow depth of field. Again the colour brings a subtle enhancement to the image – in particular the double yellow lines and the splash of back-lit green foliage in the plant boxes.
